Music Diary 2nd January 2012

Now then the trouble with starting a diary like this is that the day you do it you get struck down with a virus and don’t really feel like doing much other than lying in bed and watching old episodes of Stargate SG-1 (one of those Guilty Pleasure things that Stephen Doyle likes broadcasting about). However a steaming cup of Lemsip and a deep breath and here we go again…….

• Pleased as punch to see SCR get included by FMS as the station that does the best work for unsigned bands in its Independent Top Ten of 2011. Thanks Paul.
• Interested to see Drowned in Sounds top nine Mancunia  of 2011 – i’ve played three of them (Gnod, Air Cav and FTKOSQ) but had not heard of any of the others which demonstrates to some degree the vast amount of music out there – not enough hours in the day.
• Half way through reading an advance copy of Stephen Dobson’s excellent biography of Ian “Moet” Moss of Hamsters, Sicknurse and Kill Pretty fame. A fascinating read – will be writing a review once I have got rid of these germs.
• Just trying to finalise the line-up for what we hope will be the first of a series of SCR nights at the Kings Arms featuring local independent artists – thanks to Roland via Paul and Zena for the support in getting this going. Watch this space for details.
• A little embarrassed by the article on myself by a Mr Coupe (a teacher in Oldham allegedly) on the ‘Zeen webpages. Such things are very nice but do tend to divert one from the job in hand.
• Another new track in from the excellent “Long Hat Pins” who I will be featuring regularly on the Tuesday night show in this new year of ours.
• Three new tracks in from Ruby Tuesday – another guitar/drums duo (are bass players a dying breed I ask myself ?- not if Josh Dutton/Lord Sophie  are anything to go by – I quickly respond).  A great dirty blues sound with some serious rock hooks. Expect some airplay in due course.
• Local band Ninetails can be voted for in one of those MTV new band of 2012 thingies – being technically inept in this etherweb nonsense I am struggling to find out how to vote for them mind you – which I would like to do. Ahah – the lads have responded quickly to my plea to them on Frazzlebuch – vote here and vote often!
• Richard Youngs album “Amaranthine” is released on vinyl on the 16th January 2012.  You can stream 2 tracks from the LP here and pre-order it here – there are only 500 copies.
• Rachmaninov got the number one spot in the Classic FM chart of charts – there you go.

• 7 Day Weekend – Seasons Like These – All aged 18 or below, 7 Day Weekend are a pop punk/ alternative band from Warrington. They say “With catchy guitar riffs, and strong emotionally driven lyrics. Theyʼve drawn comparisons to You Me At Six and Young Guns. Clayton Leah (Rhythm Guitar), John Handy (Drums), Calan Nickle (Vocals), Dan Hancox (Bass) & Tom Hancox (Lead Guitar) started off just over a year ago, to aim as high as possible… And the ball hasn’t stopped rolling for us as theyʼve gone from Calan’s old garage to Manchester Academy 3 in just over a year, playing along side huge talents such as Destine, Above The Underground, That Sunday Feeling and Attack! Attack! The band has looked to play shows regularly including local Day Festivals to increase their fan base in area.”
• Air Cav– A Call to Arms –  Air Cav can finally announce the release of their long-awaited debut album Don’t Look Indoors, on Crystalline Recordings on December 5. The release marks the culmination of time spent in the shadows, working on something that they could irrevocably call theirs, something that bled their own character and that wasn’t a half-formed facsimile of different artists. The album will be preceded by the download-only single ‘A Call To Arms,’ also out on Crystalline on November 7.
• Crystal Stilts – Low Profile – Radiant Door EP – the band that stunned us earlier in the year with a great album have a new EP out which includes a cover of this Blue Orchids classic which gave me an idea based on fellow DJ Stephen Doyle’s “Different Song, Same Title” feature – I flipped it and called it “Same Song, Different Band”…. and so
• Blue Orchids – Low Profile – Serene to Severe – a classic from one of the great post-punk bands – the main man of the band – Martin Bramah –  is still working hard today to create great music…..
• Martin Bramah – I Super Real – an acoustic session track Martin did for me last year……
• Factory Star – Lucybel – the Christmas single out on Occultation soon…as played previously and likely to play again in the run up to the festivities…..
• John Hamlin – The Chimes of Christmas – and in the same vein a song from John which celebrates the season – infinitely better than those tired old replays of Slade, Wham et al.
• Monster Island – Kitchen Witch/MMS Battenburg (Flyover) – the album is now available on Bandcamp – grab it and make the lads happy – it’s free!!!!
• English Mutts – Mancouva Kiss – a duo from Moston and Blackley who sent me some songs.
• The Mang Mang Mangs – That Would Be The Normal Reaction – playing the Roadhouse on November  30th
• Air Cav – Here Be Dragons
• The Fall – Nate Will Not Return – another one from the new album

Impressive debut album for this Manchester four piece consisting of :

Chris Nield – vocals/guitar, Sophie Parkes – violin, Allan Gaskin – drums and Oisin Scarlett- bass

This lot have not been on my radar to date – a pity as they are impressive.

The PR says:

“There’s no point denying Don’t Look Indoors’ influences, they fall somewhere between a myriad of intersections; the velveteen expanses of 4AD’s 80s output, the warmly psychedelic imprint that the likes of Spaceman 3 sought to pre-cursor shoegaze with, all underpinned by a pounding rhythmic motorik. Then there’s more rustic touches, tinges of violin that suggest a more than passing interest in English contemporary folk, yet combining that with rugged vocal melodies in order to concoct something more ostentatious – it’s this tapestry that led to the group finding themselves a fan in Toronto-based producer Noah Mintz (Broken Social Scene, The Dears, Stars) who mastered and provided feedback on the album.”

Pretty near the mark there I would have said – a sort of spacy post-punk aesthetic with a touch of kraut-rock (Neu! rather than Can) in the old percussion department there, and a smattering of “Gedge”. There are some nice noisy bits as well which fit in with the melodic vocalising and the violin fits seamlessly into the whole soundscape which is a tribute to the bands abilities. The stand out tracks for me are “Here Be Dragons” and the single.

All in all a notable debut and well worth checking out. I will be playing tracks from this on Salford Music Scene in future weeks.
