This show is unapologetically up-tempo as I think we all need cheering up………but there are some quieter chilled bits to balance out the dance oriented stuff….
- Dr. Tequila – Dr Tequila – Dr Tequila : From San Francisco an innovative new band Dr. Tequila. Some describe the band as Santana in Margaritaville. ….. thanks to Richie Barron for the album And before anyone says this isn’t jazz I would point out the funky horns and say relax and chill man……
- Simon Goulding – Galeria – Familia : the funkier side of things with some exquisite playing – thanks to Captain Malibu for bringing this to my attention…..
- McCoy Tyner – Blue Bossa – The Latin All Stars : McCoy’s percussive piano style has always worked well within an Afro-Cuban groove, and this recording demonstrates this well. Regular bassist Avery Sharpe combines with a three-man percussion section to propel the group’s extended workouts. As well as the leader’s instantly recognizable style, the work of fluatist Dave Valentin, saxophonist Gary Bartz, trumpeter Claudio Roditi and the trombone of Steve Turre is excellent.
- Miles Davis – It’s About That Time – The Complete Cellar Door Sessions : Sony’s massive six-disc box set that documents six of the ten dates Davis and his band recorded during their four-day engagement at the fabled Washington club, is a stunning piece of work. It features a new lineup, with Keith Jarrett who was the lone keyboardist after Chick Corea’s departure. Airto Moreira and Jack DeJohnette also remain from the Tribute to Jack Johnson sessions. The new players include Gary Bartz on alto and soprano saxophone, and 19-year-old bassist Michael Henderson –from Stevie Wonder’s band –and on the last couple of sets, and this track the return of John McLaughlin.
- Jere Laukkanen – Teen Town – Finnish Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra : Unless you read the personnel listing on this Naxos release you would not guess this band from Helsinki. Laukkanen’s arrangement of Jaco Pastorius’ “Teen Town” give it a whole new feel.
- Me’Shell NdegeOcello featuring Herbie Hancock – Nocturnal Sunshine – Stolen Moments, Red Hot and Cool : from a series of albums put together to raise awareness about AIDS.
- Paul Motian Trio – Blue Midnight – Trio Ism : the interplay between Motian, Lovano and Frisell is both legendary and breathtaking.
- Joe Lovano – Villa Paradisco – Trio Fascination Edition One : Lovano with two masters Dave Holland and Elvin Jones – an excellent example of what a trio can achieve without a piano.
- The Heliocentrics – Joyride – Out There : an inspired mix of cinematic hip-hop instrumentals and Sun Ra-style jazz exotica with horns and percussion – excellent nu-jazz from this UK outfit from their debut album.
