A mixed bag on this show with a bit of a focus on the new Matana Roberts album……
Jimmy Woods – Look To Your Heart – Conflict : a man who made two albums and then disappeared from the world of jazz completely – his final date as a leader is a memorable affair, with an all-star cast , including trumpeter Carmell Jones, tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianistAndrew Hill, bassist George Tucker, and drummer Elvin Jones.
Steve Kuhn Trio – Memory/Why Did I Lose You? – Three Walks – a 1966 date from Kuhn where he is joined by bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Pete La Roca , both of whom he had worked with under Art Farmer, as well as on La Roca’s debut as a leader, Basra.
Art Farmer – Straight, No Chaser – Soul Eyes Live at the Blue Note – and talking of Art a reading of Monk’s classic tune.
Matana Roberts – Libation for Mr Brown/Bid Em in – Coin Coin Chapter One : Gens De Coleur Libre – my favourite new jazz record of the moment – breathtaking stuff taking the medium somewhere entirely different.
Wes Montgomery – In Your Own Sweet Way : The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery – Wes covers Brubeck and does it with his usual flair.
Joanne Brackeen – Fi-Fi’s Rock – Tring-A-Ling : her fourth recording as a leader was her first to include a horn, in this case Michael Brecker, but he is not on this track – along with alternating bassists Cecil McBee and Clint Houston, plus drummer Billy Hart.
Matana Roberts – Lulla Bye – Coin Coin Chapter One : Gens De Coleur Libre : another track from this great album. Great laminal feel to this one.
Trio of Doom – Para Oriente – Trio of Doom : a trio (doh!) featuring guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams (both members of Lifetime with organist Larry Young) along with legendary bassist Jaco Pastorius. Five days after playing at the Havana Jam Cuba in 1979, the band reconvened in a New York City studio and recut most of the tracks they had played at the concert. This is one the studio reworkings. Three masters at work.
Billie Holiday – God Bless The Child – Billy Holiday with the Tony Scott Orchestra : and to close lady day with a classic track.
